Structure of the Agency for Roads and Traffic

The internally autonomous agency without legal personality, Agentschap Infrastructuur (Agency for Infrastructure), was established by Flemish Government Decree of 7 October 2005. This agency became operational on 1 April 2006.

In the spring of 2008 the Agency for Roads and Traffic initiated a study into the current organisational culture and set-up. On the basis of this study it was checked which would be the most effective and efficient organisational set-up for the agency to be able to tackle both current and future (policy) challenges.

It turned out from the study that the best solution is a matrix structure in which the various knowledge areas (road engineering, traffic engineering and electromechanics) run horizontally through the territorial divisions. For this reason the Electricity and Mechanics Divisions of Antwerp (EMA) and Ghent (EMG) were subdivided into a centre of expertise and a territorial division for service provision to third parties. The sections that are responsible for providing services to the territorial roads divisions of the Agency for Roads and Traffic are integrated into these respective divisions.

New structure for the Agency for Roads and Traffic

On 1 April 2010, the new structure of the Agency for Roads and Traffic was finally launched. The former Traffic Engineering Division was extended with an electromechanics and telematics component. Together, they form the Traffic and Telematics Expertise Division (EVT). The former Electricity and Mechanics Divisions of Antwerp (EMA) and Ghent (EMG) merge into the Electromechanics and Telematics Division (EMT). Furthermore each territorial roads division will be extended by an Electromechanics (EM) section.
